Horticulture Technician

Summary of Function

The Horticulture Technician is responsible for the care and operation of greenhouse facilities, flowerbeds, and campus landscaping. This role supports all horticultural activities including lawn maintenance, plant care, and environmental beautification. The technician also provides training and guidance to Groundskeepers and residents involved in horticulture programs.

  • Maintains a safe, organized work environment and promotes safety awareness
  • Supports continuous quality improvement initiatives
  • Demonstrates strong customer service and problem-solving skills
  • Prepares reports and documentation as assigned
  • Attends staff and committee meetings
  • Communicates effectively across all levels
  • Assists with special projects as needed

 

Job-Specific Duties

  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance
  • Performs landscaping, lawn care, and plant maintenance
  • Oversees greenhouse operations and planting activities
  • Maintains flowerbeds across campus activity buildings
  • Educates others on plant and flower care
  • Trains and supervises residents in horticulture activities, including safety practices
  • Maintains horticulture equipment and shop areas
  • Provides training and support for Groundskeepers
  • Conducts scouting for pests, diseases, and plant deficiencies
  • Engages appropriately with residents and staff

 

Reporting & Supervisory Structure

  • Reports to: Manager, Landscape Design & Irrigation
  • Supervisory Duties: None

 

Physical & Sensory Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English
  • Physical stamina for bending, lifting (30–50 lbs), standing, and working outdoors
  • Ability to tolerate extreme temperatures, humidity, and confined spaces
  • Comfort with handling chemicals and operating horticulture equipment
  • Strong hand-eye coordination and color discrimination
  • Ability to make independent decisions and interpret information accurately

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Experience in greenhouse production and flowerbed maintenance preferred
  • Proficiency in horticulture equipment required
  • Strong time management and attention to detail
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Valid Texas driver’s license required
  • Willingness to travel as needed
