Diesel Mechanic – Job Description
A Diesel Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel-powered vehicles and equipment such as trucks, trailers, buses, and heavy machinery. This role ensures that all equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine maintenance on diesel engines (oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks)
- Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues using diagnostic tools and software
- Repair or replace defective parts such as brakes, transmissions, engines, and fuel systems
- Conduct inspections to ensure vehicles meet safety and regulatory standards
- Maintain accurate service and repair records
- Troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems
- Test drive vehicles to verify repairs
- Follow all safety procedures and company policies
Qualifications & Skills
- Proven experience as a diesel mechanic or similar role
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines and heavy equipment systems
- Ability to use diagnostic tools (e.g., JPRO, scanners)
- Familiarity with preventative maintenance programs
- Basic understanding of electrical and hydraulic systems
- Ability to read technical manuals and schematics
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Own tools preferred (varies by employer)
Work Environment
- Work is typically performed in a shop or outdoor yard environment
- Exposure to loud noise, heavy equipment, and varying weather conditions
- May require lifting heavy parts (50+ lbs)
Schedule
- Full-time; may include overtime, weekends, or on-call work depending on business needs
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and lift for extended periods
- Manual dexterity to handle tools and equipment
